Austria has lowlands, meandering rivers and vast plains, as well as and highlands and Europe's highest mountain ranges.
If you were cycling from one end of Austria to the other, a good place to start would be the West. The picturesque lakeside town of Bregenz will help you find your feet and language limitiations! Crossing brilliant mountain passes through to the former Winter Olympic City of Innsbruck, deep within a river valley with towering ranges each side, you will find quaint markets with Italian Tyrloean influences, and the enticing Landestheater's cultural performances.
Following the railway line further East, you'll take a few days to go gradually down hill to Salzburg, central Austria. Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, and the backdrop for the classic film 'The Sound of Music'. From here it's a relatively flat ride to Vienna, which is an Austrian city not to be missed.
Whilst Winter is not so good for cycling in the higher areas, if you're in Austria at this time of the year, don't miss the opportunity to go skiing at Bad Gastein or Grunau im Almtal
